Good morning year 10’s
I wonder if any if you caught any of ‘The Big Night In’ last night from comic relief and BBC Children in Need.
I saw the last 40 minutes and was moved in a number of different ways: sadness at the plight of so many who are suffering in their own individual circumstances, pride for those who work so selflessly and was smiling and laughing out loud at the various sketches. My favourites were Steve Cogan and Rob Brydon; Peter Kay singing ‘Amerillo’ with a compilation of videos of the public walking too, including firemen, shop workers, NHS workers and cleaners and finally a home made ‘Little Britain’. Great stuff.
I hope you all are still managing to find plenty to smile about, times to demonstrate compassion and are keeping safe and well.
Have a good day and weekend!
Best wishes from Mrs Mennell and me

I saw a video yesterday on the BBC news feed in which all the contributors were in their 90’s or 100″s. They gave their top 4 tips for coping in these strange times we live in: keep busy; keep in touch with friends and family ; support the front line workers and follow the government guidelines. Succinct and apt.
With this in mind, I hope you have all re-established a routine and have a structure to your day. If you need help with Google classroom be in touch; remember it’s Thursday so you can clap tonight and as always, be resilient and responsible, kind and tolerant.

Good morning Year 10’s
I saw a lovely article yesterday morning. A lorry driver with a wife and children at home, hasn’t been home for 7 weeks. David Crossely is busying travelling across to Europe and back picking up food to keep our supermarkets stocked. Essential work.
On a day recently, when he was on an English motor way, he’d reached the point where he felt like giving up. Then he saw an elderly woman on a bridge, attracting his attention and who then waved and clapped until he had passed under and driven on. He was so uplifted and heartened by this lady’s support that he wanted to thank her. He then put a message out on social media mentioning the area and amazingly he was able to track her down. He sent Eva flowers and chocolates – I think it was – as a thank you for her appreciation and support. Two wonderful people.
Mrs Menell and I wish you all a really good day. If you are still struggling to get on Google classroom, please check emails for your password and if that doesn’t work, ask me or Mrs Menell.
Best wishes for a good day

Good morning year 10’s
Confession time. I found it really hard to get out of bed yesterday morning then I struggled all day with various technical issues and problems. I wanted to give up at various points in the day.
What kept me going, first and foremost, was the fact that I can’t in all good conscience give you all advice that I don’t follow. So that’s what got me up, and whenever I wanted to stop trying during the day, that’s when I had to dig deep and carry on. I called for help at various times–my daughter, Mr Gladstone and Mr Furniss – and also gave myself breaks and a few cups of coffee.
Have I mastered and completed everything – no, and I am still having technical difficulties issues but I’m pleased to say (my Sports Studies group will be delighted to hear) I have created my first Google classroom.
My message today : if I can do it, you can!
Have a great day, get back to a routine, keep busy, be resilient and be kind and tolerant.
Best wishes from Mrs Mennell and me

Good morning year 10
Welcome to the official start of the summer term. 😊😎
One of my favourite things about the start of a new term is seeing you all again on the first morning. It’s amazing how many of you grow and change over a couple of weeks. Obviously, I’m not going to be seeing you anytime soon so it’s just occurred to me, I’ll have to prepare my self for big changes when I see you again. Can’t wait.
I really hope that you all are well and keeping in good spirits and looking after yourselves. It’s so appropriate that as a year group we are striving for taking responsibility and developing resilience – not that we ever envisaged needing them in circumstances like these. It just goes to show the importance of the life skills school endeavours to strengthen you with.
If you have taken your well deserved Easter break, I would suggest establishing a routine again will help you to get more easily back in the swing of things.
So, remember to sign in to Google classroom when invited by your teacher, don’t stress over any work given – ask for help – and be responsible, resilient, kind and tolerant.
Best wishes from Mrs Mennell and me

AHS Journey Challenge Week 3
Even though you are currently not at school, you will continue to develop and grow as an individual. Your AHS journey has not stopped! Each week, we will send you things to think about yourself and set you challenges to share with others and others in the year group. This is optional but we would love to hear from you all!

During these strange times, it can be easy to lie on the sofa, watch loads of Netflix and sleep for hours. But this can have a real impact on our mental wellbeing and resilience.
First, watch this talk on “The brain-changing benefits of exercise” by Wendy Suzuki.

Morning Year 10’s
I thought yesterday would be the last time I would be writing about Captain Tom Moore but I find it impossible to ignore the fact that he has now raised £17.4 million and counting… The news of his 100 walks has travelled around the world now and has featured in other countries including USA and Russia. Brilliant.
When I heard the news that the lockdown has been extended for another 3 weeks, I thought about what he said yesterday when asked if he had any words of advice for how to get through this difficult time. With his experience as a WW2 veteran, Captain Tom advised: we WILL get through this and it WILL end and to remember, each day, that tomorrow promises to be a good day. Wise words I think.
A reminder of my email address if you want to drop me a line for what ever reason: davey@archbishopholgates.org I really do want to hear from you.
Take good care of yourselves. Keep finding things to make you smile and feel connected to others, like the 8.00pm clap last night. Keep safe and resilient, kind and tolerant.

Did you know the within one and a half hours of writing yesterday morning, Captain Tom Moore’s NHS 100 walks around his garden had raised £5 million pounds. Amazing. This morning it’s over £12 million and counting. Staggering. He’s doing his 100th lap this morning.
Another fundraiser for the NHS has raised £2 million too. It’s the run 5 km, nominate 5 more people to do it and donate £5. Times like this really can bring out the best in people can’t it?
I hope you can all continue to strive to make the best of this situation and look after yourselves and stay safe, resilient, kind and tolerant.

I can see more blue skies from my window this morning. Great for the Easter holidays.
Have any of you heard of Ricky Gervais? He can be a very controversial figure wirh his comedy, however, I read that he had said, ‘I realised growing up that all the best things were free – friends, nature, learning and healthcare.’ Can’t argue with that.
Did you see the other day that I mentioned the 99 year old pensioner walking 100 times around his garden before he’s 100? Tom Moore he’s called. He’s now raised £ 4.5million for the NHS. Stunning.
We that amazing feat in mind, I wish you all a lovely Wednesday being responsible, safe, kind and tolerant.

Beautiful blue skies again this morning.
Have any of you seen the 90 second film the BBC launched on Friday? It’s a montage of real life footage of events of the last few weeks, accompanied by the poem ‘Don’t Quit’ by Edgar Guest, read in the first instance by Idris Elba.
The film ends by reminding us all that despite the hardships we face now, ‘we must not quit’ and together we’ll get through this. I found the highlighting of the things that are bringing us together very moving. If you see it, I hope you are moved too and that it reinforces your own compassion and resilience.
I hope you all have a lovely day.

Good morning Year 10’s
I hope you have all managed to have a lovely, relaxing Easter weekend and maybe have had an egg – I binged on mine.
I was listening to an article the other day where an old man, due to be 100 in a few weeks’ time, has set himself the target to walk around his garden 100 times before he becomes 100, for charity. He was on 50 I think. He was painfully slow, using his walking frame for support. Talk about resilience and determination.
Have a good day today, this Bank Holiday Monday and take care.

In these difficult times, it can be easy to get stuck in the negatives. It can be hard to be resilient and positive all the time.

I read yesterday that Jaguar Land Rover are lending 160 cars to the Red Cross and the NHS to deliver food and supplies to the elderly and vulnerable, which is great. Also, the phone company, ee, are giving free minutes to all NHS workers until October. Both good news to hear.
I really liked seeing the clips this morning of the clapping last night including police cars parked up together all with their blue lights flashing, folks on a platform out at sea and soldiers on duty in Estonia with an aeroplane flying over. Uplifting images.
I hope Year 10’s that you have a lovely Easter weekend and you keep safe and stay responsible, stay kind and tolerant.

Looks like a change in the weather this morning – how very British of me talking about the weather – however, it does help keep the spirits up, I believe, when there are blue skies and the sun shines through.
Thursday already again which means it’s the 8.00pm Clap for Carers tonight. Although it’s a wonderful sign of appreciation, it’s much more than that: it brings communities together and helps lift spirits. If you haven’t already joined in, tonight you can.
Whatever you do today, be safe, responsible, kind and tolerant.

Another beautiful morning weather wise to wake up to – at least it is at 7.30am.
I hope you are enjoying your Easter holiday as best you can in the circumstances.
If you enjoyed the Marsh family video last week singing their own version of ‘One Day More’ from Les Miserable, then you may be interested to know they have put on line their promised follow up, again from Les Mis, changing the words to, ‘When Tomorrow Comes’. Very fitting. It made me smile that their mum promised each of the 4 children a favour if they got it completed!
Have a lovely Wednesday, keeping safe and being responsible, kind and tolerant.

I think that as the days pass, we really have to draw upon depths of resilience and I hope you are managing to do that. As Mr Williams says, we would love to hear your stories about how you are meeting the challenge of these difficult circumstances.
BBC Breakfast news devote the last half hour of their programme every morning to highlight the amazing positives that are occurring in our society in response to the virus and if you need uplifting, or examples of resilience, you will find some there. Examples of compassion and ingenuity, humour and warmth are easy to find in these difficult times.
I wish you all a good day where you keep strong, busy, responsible, kind and tolerant.

I hope that you have had a good weekend within the guidelines and the restrictions we are under. The sunshine was welcome yesterday, wasn’t it?
If these were normal times, we would now be in the first week of the Easter Holidays. How excited we all would have been. Regardless, it is important that you give yourselves a break – and your parents – from learning demandands, and look after your mental well being.
Of course, you may be worried about being bored and looking for something to do, over the next two weeks. If you do want some work to do, there is work provided, and it is labelled Optional.
I will continue to message – whether you read them or not- because you all are never far from my thoughts.
So, try and have a good holiday but stay home and safe.
Keep busy, be responsible, kind and tolerant.

I saw an article on the news yesterday where people are putting teddies, or other soft toys in their windows so that when young families go for a walk, they count how many they see. It just adds that bit of extra fun and interest. Fancy joining in?
Did you join in the second clap last night?
There were even more people out in my street than last week. To support and appreciate others, is not only the right thing to do, it is uplifting to be part of society doing that. Long may our appreciation of others last.
One last day before the weekend. Keep busy, responsible, kind and tolerant and look after yourselves.

Over the last few weeks, you will no doubt have found things tough. Each of us have had to show resilience in very tough circumstances, resisting the temptation to carry on with our normal routines and do lots of the things we enjoy.

- Taken responsibility for jobs in the house, including looking after younger siblings?
Had to show resilience dealing with independent work at home?

I have heard many good things about you such as setting up What’s App groups to support each other with work. Well done.
I do want to remind you about what I said last week: there is a lot of work and ideas on the home learning tab. Work has been prepared in advance so it may look and feel overwhelming. Stick to a sensible and manageable timetable to avoid stressing and look after your mental well being. That’s vital.

I hope you are all OK. and managing to stay resilient.
I read yesterday about a student who puts on their school uniform everyday. Before you laugh, have a think about the benefits: it keeps things as normal as possible; it prepares the student’s mind for learning; it gives a sense of routine and purpose to the day and best of all, they can take it off later for the relaxing part of the day. Worth a go?
If you need help relaxing or smiling, think about all the home hair cuts that are now having to take place I have seen some on the TV yesterday. There were some Big mistakes! I think I’ll let mine grow.
So whether you’re in your uniform or not, I hope you have a good day staying responsible, productive, kind and tolerant.

As you can see, I have taken a photo of my mug. I wonder if any of you remember the assembly I did – I think it was in yr8 – when I put these exact words up on screen? It seems to me that the words are more fitting than ever. We can’t do anything about this situation, but we are in control of how we cope with it. Try and remember to bear this in mind and make the most of each day.
If you like Les Miserable, you may want to look at the Marsh family singing about the frustrations of being at home. It is really clever and it brought a smile to my face. In amongst their family arguments, they are dancing in the rain.

I hope you managed to have a relaxing weekend. Shame about the change in weather. Did you see it hail-stoning yesterday? Thankfully, it didn’t last.
Amazingly, I saw this morning the formula 1 Mercedes team have used their engineering skills to moderate and adapt a small piece of equipment to help fill lungs with oxygen. It has taken a week rather than months. It’s an inspiration to all you budding engineers and demonstrates the importance of that subject.
Mrs Mennell and her daughter have been busy too, baking for vulnerable people in her community. I know that Mrs Mennell won’t mind me telling you that she doesn’t particularly like baking – sorry Mr Martin–so all the more credit to her. She sends you all her very best wishes.
So year 10’s, keep busy yourselves this week but importantly, pace yourselves. There is a lot of work on the Home Learning tab but do not feel overwhelmed and under pressure to complete everything there at once. Remember, you are seeing work prepared in advance by your teachers which you wouldn’t normally see. Stick to a sensible timetable and look after your mental well being too.
Have a good day and be organised, responsible, kind and tolerant.

Wasn’t the Clapping for Carers amazing last night? It was the idea of a single person and people all over the country took part. Miss Amos said her whole street was out at 8.00pm clapping to show their support for the NHS. The nurse over the road from me messaged to say how thrilled she was that people did it. It really did add to a sense of community and hopefully it meant staff in the NHS felt supported and appreciated by us all.
On to our school community, Mr Charlton has notified me that you can take part in the University of York’s ON LINE business and enterprise programme, The Big Deal 2020. It launches on line on Wednesday, 1st April. You can find more details in Mr Daly’s ‘Head’s Update’ . Mr Charlton will put materials in the AG&T folder in the Business folder on the ‘Home Learning’ tab on this page.
This opportunity is open to all of you even if you’ve never done anything like it before, so please have a go.
Today: keep busy; be responsible; be tolerant and kind and look after yourselves.

Another thing to help lift the spirits is the news that the government asked for 250 000 volunteers to help the NHS. So far, in under 2 days, over half a million people have signed up. It is compassion coming to the fore in our society. Isn’t that brilliant?

Good morning year10’s.
I hope you all had a lovely weekend whist following the government guidelines. It’s quite fitting that our key year themes are resilience and responsibility when these are 2 key words for the whole of the UK society at this moment in time. So please, be responsible and follow all government guidelines to the letter – social distancing and not gathering together in groups. Stay at home. You will need your resilience to complete your work and to remain strong as the days pass. You can do it.
You will not be surprised to learn that now the school is so reliant on technology, I am already facing difficulties trying to upload this message. I have had to call on Mr Furniss for help… not everything has changed.
So, on this our first day, be thankful for the sunshine- to be enjoyed in our own gardens – and take care.
Responsibility and resilience – live them into being.
