Our Vision: Christian Values, Care, and Achievement for All

At Archbishop Holgate’s School, we believe that welcoming students from a wide range of cultural and linguistic backgrounds enriches our school community and reflects our commitment to Justice, Compassion, Forgiveness, and Trust. Rooted in our mission statement, “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full” (John 10:10), we ensure that every student, including those with English as an Additional Language (EAL), is valued, supported, and celebrated.

Our EAL provision is central to our inclusive ethos. We recognise the unique experiences, perspectives, and strengths that our EAL students bring, and we are committed to ensuring they achieve both academically and personally. By embedding our Christian values and fostering a culture of belonging, we create a community where diversity is celebrated and every child is given the opportunity to thrive.

We are very proud of how we work in partnership with families and students to ensure every child’s journey at AHS is happy, successful, and fulfilling.

EAL Support at Archbishop Holgate’s

We offer a wide range of tailored support for EAL students, including refugee and asylum-seeking children:

  1. Dedicated EAL Support Staff
    • Fiona Cox and Noor Ismael provide both academic and pastoral support, ensuring that every EAL student is guided through their learning journey with care and understanding.
  2. Personalised Induction Package
    • A careful, considerate induction process helps all new EAL students feel welcomed, confident, and fully integrated into our school community.
  3. Community Outreach
    • Our EAL Afternoon Tea brings together new Year 6 students and current EAL families to strengthen connections, build friendships, and celebrate cultural diversity.
  4. Celebrating Diversity
    • Through our Inclusion and Diversity Calendar we highlight cultural and religious festivals, celebrate with themed canteen weeks, and run inclusive lunch clubs and activities that showcase the richness of our community.
  5. Mentoring Opportunities
    • We work with YSIS (York Students in Schools) to provide language and cultural mentoring for EAL students, often matching them with mentors who speak the same or similar languages.
